The wave pool at Big Surf Water park.Ah, the beach with the crashing waves and the warm sand... It is the perfect setting for a summer date. Unfortunately, the nearest beach is a long drive from Phoenix.  Fortunately, you can visit Big Surf Water park instead!

People at the base of one of the slides at Big Surf Waterpark.Big Surf Water park has the third largest wave pool in the United States and generates a wave every three minutes. There is no warm sand, but there are several grassy lawns with palm leaf umbrellas. Plus, Big Surf has something that the beach doesn't - waterslides!

There are special times when you can boogie board in the wave pool.  The rest of the time, you can body surf or ride rubber rafts.  There are special surfing sessions in the evenings.  You can bring your own boogie boards and surfboards or rent them in the park.

Looking toward the family and kids area of Big SurfPeople playing in the wavepool. We went on a cloudy Sunday afternoon and a sunny Wednesday morning.  If you can manage to have clouds during your date, we recommend it.  They reduce the glare, the heat, and the crowds.

The park was built in 1969, and it is starting to show its age.  There are worn spots in the pools and a broken or worn feature here and there.  We didn't mind and we still had fun.  Here are some photos so you can see for yourself and decide if a little "fraying around the edges" will bother you.

There are changing rooms and you can rent lockers for $7-$16. There is a concession stand with hamburgers, hotdogs, and other such fare.  You aren't allowed to bring outside food into the park.  The summer season is mid-May through late September.  Big Surf is closed during the winter.
