Metro signThe recently completed METRO Light Rail links Phoenix, Tempe, and Mesa with regular service every day of the week. The trains run about twenty minutes apart, and can take you from 19th Ave and Montebello in Phoenix, all the way to Mesa, in just over an hour.

Buy light rail passes hereTo use the light rail as the basis for your date, park near a station.  Buy passes from the vending machines located in every station.  It cost $4.00 for a day pass, with unlimited rides. The vending machines take cash, debit, and major credit cards.  Validate your passes at the same machine, and you are ready to begin your light rail adventure.

Inside the light rail train Metro light rail mapIt can be helpful to have a map of Phoenix along, if you have a specific destination in mind.  Of course, you can be spontaneous and disboard at various stations, explore, and then hop back on the train. There are simple maps of the stops on the trains and in the stations.  Here are some of the places we've been on our light rail dates, and can recommend.

1. Jefferson/ 3rd Street (if you are going east) or Washington/ 3rd Street (if you are going west)- You are near Chase Ball Field, the Arizona Science Center, and the Symphony Hall. Just walking around down town Phoenix is fun.  There are good restuarants, attractive gardens, and historic sites.  We recommend eating at the famous Pizzeria Bianco

2.  Central & Encanto- You are near the Heard Museum.

4. Mill Avenue/ Third Street- You are near ASU. Walk down Mill Avenue; it is famous for the nightlife.  There are lots of restaurants and clubs, and it is a good place for people watching. You are also near Tempe Town Lake, a good place for a picnic or a quiet walk.  We've heard you can rent paddle boats and kayaks.
